Fairy Tail 1 is Kodansha's first standard paperback of the series, introducing Natsu, who cannot stand trains, and Lucy, a girl wizard after a powerful Gatekey. Start here for the manga in singles: the contents page lists four chapters, an afterword, translation notes and a preview of the next book. Its chapters are also inside Omnibus 1, which collects Vols. 1 to 3, and Master's Edition 1, which collects Vols. 1 to 5, and Box Set 1 holds this same book among the numbered Vols. 1 to 11 with a sticker sheet, so buying this paperback with any of them duplicates it. The analysis below covers only what Penguin Random House's Look Inside preview for this paperback shows: the front matter and the first chapter through printed page 18. Chapter 2 starts on page 89, and nothing after page 18 was read.

Penguin Random House's description sells Fairy Tail as a club for the most powerful wizards, one that Lucy wants to join. The first line of dialogue in the book's first chapter that names Fairy Tail calls the people there idiots. The chapter opens at a meeting of the Council, where a member addressed as Siegrain-sama says he hopes somebody will stir up some trouble, an older man asks how these young cretins got on the Council, and a speaker the page does not identify names the problem to be solved with the greatest speed: those idiots at Fairy Tail. Hargeon's caption comes on page 13. Across the pages seen, Lucy never mentions Fairy Tail. She learns the town has only one magic shop, asks it for a really powerful Gatekey, and, when a key is described as not powerful, answers that she has been looking for one. Outside she complains, βHe would only come down 1,000 J!β Her next interest is Salamander the fire dragon, cheered by a crowd of girls, whom Happy had already named on arriving: if what they heard is true, Salamander is in this town. The preview ends with Lucy wondering whether he is good-looking.
