Fairy Tail Volume 5 opens during the island conflict, with Lucy preparing the village against another attack. Keep the preceding paperback nearby: Gray is already injured, and the villagers' request and the enemies' objective are in progress. The licensed PRH preview's contents establish this book's chapter boundaries; only story pages 3–18 are analyzed here. This is the middle of an existing confrontation rather than a new mission. The excerpt shows an immediate defense, without establishing the island story's final resolution.

Lucy's confidence in a pit trap gives the opening a comic failure before the danger becomes urgent. The village has a single gate, so her plan assumes an enemy must approach along the ground. The trap catches Natsu, who is carrying the injured Gray, while the actual attackers arrive overhead. Happy's objections were well founded, but his ridicule alone supplies no replacement defense. Natsu's response is more useful when the poison begins falling: he moves Lucy away, directs the villagers inward and asks Happy to take him into the air. His earlier clumsiness does not cancel that adjustment. The headman's refusal to leave his son's grave adds a different obstacle that tactics cannot simply dismiss. The scene brings faulty assumptions, quick correction and grief into the same defensive emergency.
