Fullmetal Alchemist Volume 13 starts with Envy facing Edward during the Gluttony confrontation. The licensed Yen Press digital preview continues that immediate fight in chapter 50, with chapters 50–53 listed in its contents. The checked passage ends before the confrontation's outcome, leaving later portal and soul developments unread. This opening note therefore supplies no clean stopping recommendation. Its digital source also leaves the VIZ standard paperback's physical identity and blank chapter endpoints unchanged.

The opponents' rules are uneven before their abilities enter the fight. Envy tells Gluttony to spare Mustang and the Elric brothers while allowing him to kill Lin. Edward hears a possible opening in the demand to keep the brothers alive, but that protection does not extend to their ally. Splitting the opponents redirects danger rather than removing it. Lin gains an advantage by accepting a hit to make an attack, only for Envy to reject the assumption of a human duel. A body that can change shape turns the apparent opening into a grip around Lin's neck. The exchange makes fairness a poor prediction of what the enemy will permit. Edward's usefulness to the Homunculi creates a constraint he can notice; it cannot make the whole group safe, and the checked passage ends with Lin still under threat.
