Fullmetal Alchemist Volume 12 begins with Hohenheim traveling away from Resembool. Its licensed Yen Press digital contents lists chapters 46–49, and the free opening passage starts chapter 46 with a carriage journey. The analysis below ends at the chapter's early title spread; later Scar and Winry developments remain outside this reading. The digital witness and the VIZ standard paperback are separate editions, so the sample supplies no new physical chapter endpoints or claim about identical printing.

Hohenheim carries a family photograph into a conversation with strangers. He describes Edward's strength as a sign that his son no longer needs him, but that conclusion belongs to Hohenheim: the photograph cannot certify what Edward wants. A bandit attack then shifts the question from his relationship to his family to what the other passengers can understand about him. He stands between them and the guns, asks the attackers to let them go, and remains upright after repeated shots. His first concern afterward is whether the photograph was damaged. Protection and attachment are visible before explanation. When a passenger asks who he is, the opening answers with his own description of himself as a monster, beside images of other threatening figures. The label does not erase the people he has just shielded, and the passage has not yet explained his survival.
