Hunter x Hunter 5 opens with a family confrontation inside the final phase of the Hunter Exam. Continue from the previous standard paperback: the contestants and the exam’s unusual rules are already established. This VIZ single contains chapters 36 to 44. The opening analysis follows Killua’s attempt to name a wish outside the work his family expects of him. It distinguishes that wish from both an exam result and a claim about the unread remainder of the volume.

Illumi describes assassination as Killua’s nature, making a family expectation sound like an objective diagnosis. Killua answers with a less grand ambition: he wants to be friends with Gon and is tired of killing. The exchange is not a contest between an informed brother and a child with no history. Illumi knows what the family has trained him to do; that knowledge does not give him sole authority over what Killua can want. Leorio’s insistence that Gon already considers him a friend supplies a counterexample to Illumi’s account of his incapacity. It does not remove the threat Illumi makes toward Gon or erase Killua’s past violence. The friendship exists in the dialogue before Killua can securely act on it. This analysis reads only printed pages 7–17 of VIZ’s licensed English preview, within the opening confrontation. The exam’s outcome and Killua’s later choices remain outside that reading.
