Chapters 8 to 16, and the volume that introduces the people the series is actually about. The detention-center fight ends early, and then a group of curses and one former sorcerer sit down in a diner to discuss what they have just caused. That scene is the series showing its hand: the antagonists are organized, they have a plan, and it is aimed at Gojo. Season 1 covers every chapter here, so an anime viewer starts at Vol. 8. A reader going in order should slow down for the diner.
Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.
Yuji dies early in this volume, which is the first sign that the series means what it says about the vessel arrangement. He is revived within the volume but kept hidden until Vol. 4, and the story carries on without him: Megumi and Nobara are handed to the second-years, a school competition is set up, and the plot proceeds as though its protagonist is a subplot. Suguru Geto arrives at the diner with Mahito and the others, and the plan he states there, to seal Gojo, is the spine of everything through Vol. 16. Akutami plants it here and lets it sit for eight volumes. What makes the choice worth arguing with is that the series never lets the reader forget the plan, so the middle of the run reads as a countdown rather than as episodes. Readers who find the Shibuya arc overlong usually met it without this volume's setup behind them.
