- Season 1 ep. 1–24
The series stops being about school here, and it does not go back. Chapters 17 to 25 leave the Tokyo campus for a cinema, a mutated body and a high school student named Junpei Yoshino who is befriended by the thing that mutated his classmates. Kento Nanami arrives in the same stretch as Yuji's supervising sorcerer, a salaryman with opinions about overtime, and this site's most-quoted line from him is sourced to season 1, episode 9. Season 1 covers the whole volume, so an anime viewer starts at Vol. 8. For a reader, this is the book where the register changes from tournament to atrocity.

Mahito's technique reshapes a human soul into whatever he wants the body to become, and the volume uses it on strangers before it uses it on anyone the reader knows. That order is deliberate: the series establishes the cost on people with no lines, so that when it reaches Junpei the reader already knows what is possible. Nanami is the counterweight. He left sorcery for a corporate career, came back, and treats the work as work, which gives the series an adult in a cast of teenagers and gives the reader a register that is neither heroic nor cynical. The turn is not that the story gets darker, which is the thing every account of this series says. It is that the antagonist's method becomes the subject. Mahito is not trying to win a fight. He is demonstrating a thesis about what people are, and the next volume is Akutami proving he will pay for the demonstration in full.
