The middle of a tournament, and not a book to buy on its own. Chapters 35 to 43 are the Kyoto Goodwill Event in progress: the fights have started before this volume opens. Bought with Vols. 4 and 6 it is the stretch where the series fills in a cast it has been running on three characters. Bought alone it is a school sports arc with no beginning and no end. Season 1 covers it, so an anime viewer starts at Vol. 8. Viz lists it in print at $11.99.

Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.

What the event is for is population. Jujutsu Kaisen has been a three-student series, and this volume gives page time to Aoi Todo, Maki Zen'in, Mai Zen'in, Momo Nishimiya, Noritoshi Kamo and the remote-piloted Mechamaru, most of whom matter later and one of whom matters enormously. Todo decides Yuji is his best friend on the evidence of a conversation about taste in women, and the series plays that as a joke for a volume before turning it into the most reliable partnership in the run. Maki's fight with her sister does the sharper work: it establishes the Zen'in clan as a family that produces sorcerers by attrition, which is the setup for Vol. 22 and for Megumi's name. The honest note is that this is Akutami writing a required Jump structure. The tournament is the genre's tax, and the series pays it competently rather than well.
