Chapters 44 to 52, and the volume where the technique that decides the ending is taught. The tournament is interrupted by an attack designed to keep Gojo out of the field, which is the first time the antagonists demonstrate that they have planned around him rather than hoped to avoid him. Inside that fight Todo teaches Yuji to land a Black Flash, and the volume takes its title from it. Season 1 covers the whole book, so an anime viewer starts at Vol. 8.
Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.
The series treats Black Flash as a threshold rather than a move: it is how a sorcerer stops being talented and starts being dangerous. Yuji lands one here and lands the one that matters in Vol. 29, and the line this site quotes from him in the Shibuya arc depends on the reader understanding the difference. The volume's other business is Hanami, a curse who states a position, that humanity is a wound in the planet, and is then driven off by Gojo clearing half a forest.
