The Defense Force entrance test has ended, making this a volume for readers following the candidates beyond their assessment. Finishing the test and being safe are different things in a profession organized around emergencies. Keep the examination setup in mind: the official boundary matters because it separates what the candidates were asked to demonstrate from what they may actually have to do. This is the aftermath of recruitment, not a fresh introduction to Kafka.
Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.
An examination depends on somebody controlling its conditions. The humanoid kaiju breaks that arrangement by reviving a defeated honju and directing it at Kikoru. Kafka then moves to defend her. This is an argument against treating official results as a complete account of capability: the threat arrives after the final test has finished, when the candidates still have to act. The volume therefore crosses an institutional boundary without offering the safety that boundary implies. Its place in the run is the untidy exit from the entrance test, rather than a fresh recruitment premise.
