Komi begins her manga with a classmate discovering what her silence conceals. Tadano wants an inconspicuous high-school life, but meeting Komi changes his plans. VIZ presents the opening as the start of their effort to help her make a hundred friends. Start here for the distinction that makes the premise work: the person classmates admire is struggling to do something they take for granted.

Tadano's useful quality in VIZ's opening description is his willingness to revise a judgment. Komi's apparent aloofness turns out to be difficulty connecting, and his response is practical help. That makes the hundred-friend target both appealing and suspect: a count provides direction, but it cannot measure whether anyone understands the person being counted as a friend. The strongest reason to start the run is this mismatch between reputation and need. Treating Komi simply as an unreachable school beauty would reproduce the misunderstanding the opening asks Tadano to correct.
