The student from the other school matters because academic rivalry and romantic history arrive together. VIZ identifies the visiting student as a scholastic and romantic competitor with a prior connection to Tadano, giving the camp a personal conflict. Her arrival therefore does more than supply another contestant. It brings a version of Tadano's life that Komi cannot know simply by being his girlfriend. The stronger argument for this section is that difference in access to the past, rather than the threat of a replacement partner. A secure relationship still has information it has not encountered.
