The study-camp conflict gives Komi a reason to consider what happens to a defeated rival. VIZ's synopsis positions this book around the camp's conclusion and the relationship left behind by the competition. It belongs with the preceding setup for readers following Kawai's involvement. The useful stopping distinction is narrow: the camp reaches its result, while the problem of how to treat another person survives the end of the contest.

Kawai loses the contest for Tadano's affection, but VIZ describes Komi noticing how lost she seems afterward. That makes victory an inadequate ending. A rival is convenient while competition supplies her role; once she has lost, the story has to decide whether she remains worth attention. Komi's wish to make a friend gives this camp conclusion its stronger purpose. It asks the friendship project to absorb someone whose recent interest was opposed to hers. The result is more demanding than uncomplicated generosity toward a stranger, because the previous conflict cannot simply be removed from the introduction.
