Land of the Lustrous continues Phos's campaign to force Kongo to pray. With the other gems defending their teacher, this is a confrontation already burdened by earlier loyalties, not a useful place to meet the cast. Read it for the collision between Phos's objective and the people blocking it. The ongoing effort to obtain a prayer has made physical resistance central to a goal that cannot be described merely as winning a fight.

The gems are trying to protect Kongo while Phos attacks with the determination to obtain a prayer at any cost. On the moon, Cairngorm demands an explanation from Aechmea. Those demands should not be treated as equivalent forms of pressure: one is enforced through an assault, while the other asks someone to account for what is happening. Their juxtaposition makes the volume useful for following how differently characters pursue an answer. The combat belongs to an ongoing struggle over Kongo's prayer, so this is continuation reading. The immediate opposition consists of people protecting their teacher, which prevents Phos's objective from supplying its own moral permission.
