Phos inherits Kongo's memories and abilities, completes the prayer, and sends the Lunarians into the void. What follows gives the final volume a purchase argument beyond completing a row of spines: achieving the long-sought result leaves Phos alone. An unfamiliar mineral lifeform then offers an occasion to contemplate what has happened. That makes aftermath part of the ending's work, rather than treating the prayer as a sufficient answer by itself. The distinction matters for readers invested in whether Phos can obtain the desired result. The final book also asks what remains for the person who has obtained it, after the beneficiaries are gone.
