Joint battle training continues in My Hero Academia volume 22. Class 1-A has to contend with Class B's inventive use of Quirks, putting the emphasis on students testing one another rather than a fresh villain crisis. This is a training installment for readers following the wider class. It is not the strongest single-book purchase for someone seeking the series' main external conflict, and the exercise is already under way when this volume takes it up.

The useful feature of the training is its comparative standard. Class B makes Class 1-A respond to other students' creativity, so familiar abilities cannot simply be treated as an advantage by default. VIZ also emphasizes reflection on where the students stand relative to one another. That is a narrower purpose than advancing a villain campaign, and it is fair to call the book a breather on that axis. The exercise makes progress visible through opponents at school: improvement has to survive contact with someone else's solution, rather than exist only in a student's own assessment.
