My Hero Academia volume 23 continues the last match of the classes' joint training. Readers should bring the earlier exercises with them, since this is a continuation rather than the beginning of the school contest. The book also opens a new threat beyond that exercise. Its position is transitional: buying only the training setup leaves out this installment, while choosing this one alone drops you into a match that already has its participants and history.

The Meta Liberation Army begins to act while Midoriya confronts questions about One For All's unused potential. Those developments do different jobs: one enlarges what he may have to face, while the other makes his own inheritance less settled. The arrival of a new enemy would be a simple escalation if the hero's abilities were already understood. Here, the publisher pairs it with an encounter involving a former user of One For All. That gives the debut its useful tension: more potential is available, but possessing an inheritance and understanding it remain separate tasks.
