Chapters 109 to 117, and the book where the tournament stops being a tournament. The Chunin Exam finals reach Sasuke against Gaara, and the arena is attacked before the bracket can finish. What follows is not a contest with rules: it is an invasion, and the fight that decides it is the one the village's leadership is dragged into. Season 2 of the anime covers chapters 62 to 144, so anyone arriving from it has seen everything in here and should start at Vol. 17. Viz lists the standard book at $11.99 and states that 3-in-1 book 5 collects Vols. 13 to 15 for $16.99, which is the cheaper way to own this stretch.

Sasuke's answer to Gaara is Chidori, the technique Kakashi taught him, and this book is where the series first puts an attack built to kill in the hands of one of its children. Then it drops the match. Chapter 115, printed as 'The Chûnin Exam, Concluded...!!', ends the exam without a result, Orochimaru takes the Third Hokage hostage above the stadium, and Naruto never runs a tournament bracket again. What it switches into is the register it keeps for the remaining 129 chapters of Part I: a village under attack, and a teacher facing the student he did not stop. The last chapter sends Sakura, Naruto and Shikamaru after Sasuke, who has gone after Gaara alone. That is the first time Sasuke is in a different story from everyone else, and the run through Vol. 27 keeps returning to the arrangement.
