Two different English books are called Naruto volume 7, and they share no chapters at all. Viz's 3-in-1 Edition renumbers from one, so its seventh book is not the standard seventh volume: by our arithmetic it holds Vols. 19, 20 and 21, this one included. Viz prints the contents of 3-in-1 books 1 to 6 and prints nothing for book 7 or anything after it, so that pairing is an inference and the listing will not confirm it. This is the trap: from here to the end of the line, a buyer cannot tell from the product page which standard volumes are in the book. Inside this one are chapters 163 to 171, the end of the search for Tsunade, with Orochimaru and Kabuto on the other side of it and the Hokage seat still empty. Season 3 runs to chapter 225, so a viewer has been through all of this.

Tsunade does not heal him. She tries to kill him, and the arc resolves into a three-way fight: Jiraiya against Orochimaru, Naruto against Kabuto, and Tsunade pinned until Naruto wins the bet by putting a completed Rasengan into Kabuto's stomach. Orochimaru leaves with his arms still sealed, and that unhealed injury is the constraint that drives him for the rest of Part I, because he now needs a new body. Tsunade takes the hat in the last chapter here, the first time the village is led by someone the reader has watched refuse the job. The arithmetic behind the edition trap is worth seeing whole. Seventy-two standard volumes at $11.99 come to $863.28; twenty-four 3-in-1 books at $16.99 come to $407.76, a saving of $455.52, or about 53 percent. That line is the cheapest way to read Naruto in English by a wide margin, and it is also the line whose contents Viz stops describing at book 6.
