Team 7's first job outside the village, and the book where Naruto stops being a school story. Chapters 8 to 17 send Kakashi and three recent graduates to escort a bridge builder home to the Land of Waves, and the client has lied about what the job is. The opponent is Zabuza Momochi, the first professional the series sends after the whole team. Chapter 15 is titled 'Return of the Sharingan', and the eye it names is the one the Uchiha half of this story runs on. At 216 pages it is the longest of the first twelve books, thirty-two pages more than Vol. 5 for the same $11.99, and Viz places it in 3-in-1 book 1 with Vols. 1 and 3.

The bell test is passed in chapter 8, and it is passed by breaking the rule Kakashi set: Sakura and Sasuke feed a tied-up Naruto, which under the stated terms disqualifies all three and is the only correct answer to the question actually being asked. From there the volume escalates without announcing it. Tazuna has bought a C-rank escort and concealed that Gato wants him dead, which puts three recent graduates in front of Zabuza Momochi. Kakashi uncovers the Sharingan, copies Zabuza technique for technique, and the copying is the demonstration: the eye is less a weapon than a way of taking someone else's. Zabuza is beaten and not killed. A masked boy presenting himself as a tracker removes the body before anyone can check it, and the book ends with Kakashi putting all three into training for a rematch he expects and cannot date. Haku is the name under the mask, and the next two volumes belong to him.
