A season boundary falls on the ninth of this book's ten chapters, and the season after it adapts nothing at all. Chapters 403 to 412 run from Naruto learning what Amegakure cost to Sasuke's team meeting the host of the Eight-Tails. Shippuden season 6 reaches chapter 411 on Sasuke's side of the story only. Season 7's eight episodes are entirely anime-original. Season 8 opens with Naruto learning of Jiraiya's death, which is in this book, and runs to chapter 450, so a viewer who finished season 7 should start at the beginning of this volume, and a viewer who finished season 8 starts at chapter 451, four books on. Box Set 2 covers volumes 28 to 48 at $224.99.

The book splits the cast for the rest of the arc and never rejoins it. Naruto goes to the toads to learn senjutsu exactly as Jiraiya did and leaves working out Pain's identity to everyone else; Sasuke renames Hebi as Taka, sells its services to Akatsuki in exchange for help destroying Konoha, and is sent after Killer Bee. Chapter 407, 'Addressee: Naruto', is the delivery Jiraiya arranged two volumes earlier. Killer Bee is the other thing the book is for. He handles four opponents at once and releases the Eight-Tails anyway, which sets the price Sasuke pays in the next volume and establishes a jinchuriki who is functional rather than tormented.
