Shippuden season 8 ends on the eighth of this book's eleven chapters, and season 9 then adapts nothing at all. Chapters 443 to 453 close the Pain arc and open the next one. Season 8 runs to chapter 450. Season 9's twenty-one episodes are an anime-original flashback, so a viewer who finished it is still at chapter 450 and starts three chapters from the end of this volume. Season 10 opens at chapter 451 and runs to chapter 489. This is also the last book in Box Set 2, which Viz states as volumes 28 to 48 and prices at $224.99, so a reader who bought that set stops here and has to start a second one to continue.

The arc ends in a conversation and pays for it. Naruto uses what Jiraiya sent back to find Nagato, asks him how a fellow student of the same teacher arrived at peace through war, refuses the answer he gets, and spares him. Nagato then spends his life reviving everyone who died defending Konoha, which undoes the cost of Vol. 46 and is the decision this arc has to answer for. The village names Naruto a hero. Tsunade, who burned everything she had keeping the villagers alive, is in a coma; Danzo replaces her as the candidate for Sixth Hokage and makes his first act an order to execute Sasuke as a traitor. That is the seam that matters more than the anime one: chapters 451 to 453 are not the end of anything, they are the opening of the Five Kage Summit, and Box Set 2 ends on them. The set closes three chapters after the arc does.
