- Season 8: 二人の救世主の章 (Two Saviors) ep. 152–175
Ten chapters, one fight: chapters 433 to 442 are Naruto against Pain's last two bodies, start to finish. Nothing else in Part II is a single sustained engagement, and it is the volume that gains most from being read collected, because serialization broke it into ten weekly waits. Shippuden season 8 covers chapters 412 to 450, so the anime has been through it. The fight is decided here. The terms it was fought over are not, and the conversation that settles them is in the next book, which is also the last one in Box Set 2. Viz has it at 192 pages for $11.99.
Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.
Naruto loses first. He is pinned, and Pain asks him what he would actually do to bring about peace, which is the question the arc has been building toward and which Naruto cannot answer. Hinata puts herself between them, says what she has never said, and is nearly killed for it. Naruto comes close to releasing the Nine-Tails and is stopped by the spirit of Minato Namikaze, who tells him he is his father, says out loud that he suspects Tobi is running Pain and Akatsuki, and leaves him the question rather than an answer. Then Naruto wins. Chapter 436 is titled 'Peace' and sits in the middle of the fight rather than at its end, which is the clearest signal the book gives that winning was never what it was for. The answer arrives in the next volume, in a conversation.
