Chapters 474 to 483 send Sasuke after Danzo on Konoha's own ground, and the fight decides what kind of character the series is now handling. Danzo holds his own for a while and then does not. What he uses to stay alive, and what it costs the people nearest him, belongs below. Sakura arrives afterwards having abandoned her own team, and Kakashi arrives after her. Chapter 477 is titled 'Do Not Speak of Itachi', and it is the one to watch. Until this book Sasuke is a retrieval problem with a deadline attached; the volumes after it plan around him as a combatant. Viz does not print the contents of its 3-in-1 books past the sixth, so a reader buying this stretch the cheap way is trusting arithmetic rather than a stated list.

Danzo dies in chapter 481, and how long that takes is the volume's real content: chapter 479 is titled 'The Izanagi' and chapter 480 'Sacrifice'. The series has been building toward this account of Konoha's leadership since the Uchiha revelations, and this is where it is settled. To reach him, Sasuke drives an attack through Karin, his own teammate, and then tries to finish her while she is down. Sakura stops it. That sequence, rather than the summit, is the register change: Sasuke's violence stops being aimed and starts being indiscriminate, and the people who wanted him back are standing there while it happens. Danzo's suicide jutsu takes nobody with him. Kakashi arrives at the end of the book intending to kill his own student.
