- Season 15: 忍界大戦・サスケとイタチ (Sasuke and Itachi) ep. 321–348
One thread of the Fourth Shinobi World War closes in these ten chapters, and the thread that runs to the end of the series opens in them. Chapters 588 to 597 leave Sasuke holding what Itachi told him, bring Orochimaru back into the story, and return to Naruto's group against Tobi on the battlefield. Shippuden season 15 runs to chapter 606, so a viewer is still ahead of the books here. It is not a clean place to stop: the closing chapters start something running that the ten remaining volumes are about, and the arc that ends is settled before the halfway mark. Viz lists 192 pages at $11.99, and Box Set 3 holds it among the volumes Viz states as 49 to 72.

Itachi dismisses the reanimated army: chapter 589 releases the technique and every summoned ninja returns to the afterlife except Madara, who cuts his own tie to Kabuto and stays. That exception is the plot of the rest of the run, and it is the cleanest piece of engineering in the book: the series disposes of its supply of villains and keeps the one it still needs. Itachi then says goodbye to Sasuke a second time and goes for good. Sasuke, who now has his answer, revives Orochimaru instead of acting on it, and Orochimaru takes his chakra back from Kabuto and offers to take him to the people who know the rest. Meanwhile Tobi feeds the discarded chakra of Kurama and Gyuki into the Demonic Statue and starts raising the Ten-Tails. The volume closes one war and starts a second one that the series never gets out from under.
