Season 15: Sasuke and Itachi 「忍界大戦・サスケとイタチ」 ep. 321–348; Season 17: Team 7 Reunited 「忍界大戦・第七班再び」 ep. 362–372

The anime and the books part company in the ninth chapter of this book, and anyone arriving from Shippuden needs to know exactly where. Shippuden season 15 ends at chapter 606, the ninth of the ten chapters here. Season 16, episodes 349 to 361, then adapts nothing at all from the manga: thirteen anime-original episodes about Kakashi. Season 17 starts at chapter 607, the last chapter in this book. So the where-to-start answer for a viewer finishing either season is chapter 607, and this volume buys them nine chapters they have already watched and one they have not. Who Tobi is stops being a question inside these chapters. What the answer is belongs in the section below, for anyone still ahead of it.

Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.

Tobi is Obito Uchiha, Kakashi's teammate, believed killed in the previous war years before the series began. Chapter 599 names him and chapters 600 to 606 are his history: Madara found his crushed body and kept him alive, he rebuilt himself to get back to his team, and he arrived in time to watch Kakashi kill Rin. Everything the Akatsuki has done since Part I is routed back through that, including Nagato, whom Obito steered. The anime's placement around the reveal is worth noting: season 16 spends thirteen original episodes on Kakashi's ANBU years and sits exactly at this boundary, immediately before the chapters that make Kakashi the reason the villain exists. Chapter 607, the last in the book, is where the adaptation picks the manga back up, so a viewer who buys here for new material is paying $11.99 for one chapter of it.
