Two anime seasons meet five chapters into this book, which makes it the hardest volume in this stretch to arrive at from the screen. Chapters 317 to 327 finish the Foxy detour, put a Marine admiral in front of the crew, and then set them down in the city the volume is named for, looking for someone who can repair the Going Merry. Season 7 stops at chapter 321, the fifth chapter here, and season 8 opens the Water Seven arc at 322, the sixth. A viewer who skipped season 7 should also know that at least sixteen of its thirty-three episodes, 196 to 206 and 220 to 224, adapt no manga at all. Viz lists 232 pages at $11.99, at the top of the range the series prints in.

Aokiji is what this volume is for. A Marine admiral walks into the story, mentions that he and Robin have a history, freezes both her and Luffy, and leaves, and nothing the crew does affects any part of it. Her reaction to him is the thread the entire Water Seven arc pulls on. The other half of the book is administrative and worse than any fight in it: professional shipwrights examine the Going Merry and declare it beyond repair, which turns a ship into a decision and sets up the argument in Vol. 35. The seam here is genuinely awkward. A viewer coming off season 7 has seen the Foxy resolution and the admiral but not the city, so the new material for them is the last six chapters, 322 to 327; a reader who resents paying for five chapters they have already watched can start at Vol. 35 instead and lose the diagnosis on the Merry, which is the thing Vol. 35 is about.
