Ouran High School Host Club Volume 1 starts with a debt, making it the place to test the comedy before buying the run. Haruhi is a scholarship student whose accident with the club's vase leaves her working for its wealthy members. The useful contrast is already present: her scholarship place at school contrasts with a social circle she enters through financial obligation. Start here for that imbalance, before choosing favorite hosts.

Haruhi's job begins as repayment, which makes the club's extravagant world less innocent than a simple fantasy of rich classmates. The boys can treat their surroundings as ordinary; a broken possession creates an obligation large enough to reorganize her school life. That difference gives the opening its argument. Wealth determines whose accident becomes work. For a new reader, the first book is a better purchase than a later character showcase because it establishes the terms on which Haruhi joins the group. Attraction is only part of the arrangement.
