Rurouni Kenshin 8 opens after Kenshin has left for Kyoto, with the people remaining in Tokyo deciding how to respond. Acts 58–66 begin at a departure's edge: Sanosuke wants to follow, Kaoru has withdrawn, and Yahiko wants someone to reach her. The licensed opening reads through Saito's argument that following Kenshin would expose another weakness. It establishes the disagreement around the journey without showing who finally travels or what happens in Kyoto.

Sanosuke calls Kenshin selfish for leaving without a word to him. Kaoru, meanwhile, repeatedly remembers the farewell she did receive. A message has not made the separation easier for her, and Yahiko's impatient suggestion to follow or forget him does not answer her distress. Sanosuke prepares to leave by borrowing money and accepting a friend's bombs, described by that friend as protection. Saito then supplies a competing account of protection: a companion Kenshin must defend would give Shishio somewhere to strike. That is Saito's tactical judgment, not proof that Sanosuke has no worth. The opening places hurt, friendship and battlefield usefulness against one another before the journey begins. It leaves open whether staying behind is care, exclusion or an assessment that can be challenged.
