Sailor Moon begins with Usagi discovering that a talking cat has assigned her a second life. Luna brings the mission; Usagi has to become the person who carries it out. Start here if the attraction is watching the team take shape rather than meeting it already assembled. This is the standard English edition, whose opening book has translation notes and reads from right to left.
Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.
The useful promise of this opening is that Usagi does not begin with a complete support system. Luna identifies her as Sailor Moon, and other girls with the same calling enter the picture. That makes recruitment part of the premise rather than background information supplied before the story starts. Buying the beginning matters for that distinction: the group is something to be discovered alongside the responsibility. The Moon Princess supplies a duty before Usagi has the knowledge to understand it. A title and a task arrive together; understanding has to follow.
