Snow White with the Red Hair opens with Shirayuki leaving a prince who treats her appearance as an entitlement. Her red hair attracts the prince of Tanbarun, and her escape brings her into contact with Zen and his companions. Start here for the distinction the romance has to earn: help can give someone room to choose, while possession removes it. The paperback also includes the separate one-shot “Colorful Seasons of August”.

The opening makes flight an act of judgment. Shirayuki does not need to discover whether the prince finds her desirable; the problem is that he treats desire as sufficient authority. Zen enters the premise as someone who helps her after she leaves. That order matters to the romance: her refusal exists before his intervention, so assistance cannot claim credit for giving her a will of her own. This is the first book to buy for the main story. The included one-shot is an additional work, not evidence that the central relationship reaches a conclusion within this paperback.
