Shirayuki begins her court herbalist apprenticeship in a book about earning responsibility through work. Her new mentor is a child, which immediately makes age a poor guide to who should teach whom. The medical assignment gives the career premise a practical test rather than leaving it as a pleasant job title. Read this after the opening volume for the start of her professional life at court, with its own hierarchy and obligations.

The apprenticeship introduces a useful complication to the fantasy of finding a place at court: Shirayuki must accept instruction there. Her mentor being a child makes deference depend on competence rather than seniority. An outbreak at a fort housing Clarines soldiers then turns that lesson into an obligation toward patients. Their need cannot wait for the apprentice to become comfortable with the arrangement. The attraction of this book is therefore specific to the herbalist story. Royal proximity may change where Shirayuki works, but it does not perform the diagnosis or discharge the responsibility for her.
