Soul Eater Volume 2 continues the remedial assignment with the students arriving at Doctor Stein's laboratory. The opening shifts from his repeated physical mishaps to his assessment of the visitors' souls. This is Yen Press's standard numbered volume, whose contents list chapters 2–5. The analysis uses seven inspected opening pages of the publisher's authorized English digital preview. Paperback wording and pagination were not compared, and the reading does not establish the assignment's outcome or review the later chapters listed in the contents.

Stein's entrance invites the students to mistake a poor first impression for an adequate assessment. He rolls toward the doorway, falls, adjusts the screw in his head and repeats the failed entrance. The visitors watch with embarrassment and curiosity. Once addressed, however, he can describe the students in a way that reverses who is doing the observing. He distinguishes Maka's seriousness from Soul's cynicism and identifies their unstable partnership. Black Star's demand to make the encounter about himself then supplies evidence for another judgment. Stein says that curiosity, rather than a grudge, drives him and includes himself among his research subjects. That inclusion does not establish an ethical limit on his treatment of others. The opening makes his analytical ability credible while leaving the students exposed to an observer whose standards they have not yet tested.
