Soul Eater Volume 3 opens with Soul waking from a frightening dream while Maka watches over him. Yen Press's licensed digital preview lists chapters 6 to 9, beginning with Holy Sword. This analysis uses that digital edition's opening; it does not certify the paperback's wording or page layout. Continue the standard sequence for the injury and guilt behind the bedside conversation. The excerpt also starts the library search for Excalibur, but ends before that adventure develops.

Several people say reassuring things without resolving what the listener needs. Soul tells Maka he is fine and should not be blamed for his injury, yet the reassurance makes her more visibly upset. Medusa offers professional concern while privately treating the black blood in him as a research opportunity; the reader receives information her patients do not. Later, Maka's father declares his love for her mother, and Maka answers by asking why he repeatedly cheated. His insistence on affection cannot supply an account of his conduct. These scenes make care depend on more than the speaker's chosen words, though Soul's awkwardness does not establish the same concealed motive as Medusa's. The reading covers only Yen's preview images 6 to 20, ending during the rooftop exchange, without the later Excalibur outcome.
