The Apothecary Diaries manga Volume 16 opens with Maomao doing medical work under guard in a fortress. Its contents list chapters 79–81 in Nekokurage’s Square Enix adaptation. The inspected opening follows her work and an attempt to help her escape; later developments named in the contents remain unread. Continue from the preceding manga book. A well-stocked workroom gives Maomao something to do without giving her freedom. She recognizes that Shenmei wants an impossible rejuvenation cure, yet continues working instead of treating that impossibility as permission to do nothing. The children’s visits bring a different kind of impractical hope. Kyou-u supplies a wire and offers to draw a guard away; Maomao doubts the wire can unlock her door, and the diversion ends with him caught. The opening shifts the test of help from recognizing captivity to possessing a workable means of ending it. His recognition that she is a prisoner matters, but it is not an escape plan that works. When Suirei questions him, Maomao hopes she will overlook the attempt. That is a hope in her private account, not confirmation of a secret agreement. The preview ends with the possibilities of help still constrained by the people controlling the room.
