The Apothecary Diaries manga Volume 15 opens with Jinshi questioning a court lady about the missing freckled attendant. Chapters 75–78 belong to the Square Enix manga adaptation, rather than the same-numbered novel or another manga version. The opening assumes the preceding investigation and Maomao's absence. The analysis below reads only the licensed opening pages, following Jinshi's search and the strain on his public identity; the later festival, deal and fortress chapters are not treated as read.

Jinshi reminds himself that he is acting as a eunuch before asking his question, but the reminder does not make the encounter gentle. He seizes the woman, reads her racing pulse as possible knowledge and has to be brought back to composure by Gao Shun. Her recognition of his resemblance to someone she knew unsettles him in a different way. The passage then moves between a grave, his memories and the search for information at the Garnet Palace. Those private associations complicate the official mask without giving every recollection equal evidentiary weight: his belief about his own childhood is an account of what troubled him. By the final pages, he is identifying attendants beneath their makeup. The opening makes close observation serve pressure as readily as inquiry.
