The Apothecary Diaries manga Volume 6 continues Nekokurage's Square Enix adaptation of Natsu Hyuuga's story. Check the manga format and artist when ordering: the prose novels are a separate run, and this number identifies the manga paperback. The licensed PRH preview's contents begin with “Makeup” and end with “The Ritual.” This analysis covers story pages 3–19, where Jinshi asks Maomao to change his appearance. It assumes their earlier relationship and does not review the subsequent outing or the rest of the book.

Jinshi's request turns cosmetics from an expected enhancement into a problem of concealment. Maomao first imagines the dangers of making his beauty even more striking; he instead wants to pass as someone ordinary. Her solution extends beyond his face. Fine incense, carefully kept hair, expensive clothing and his body shape all disclose a social position that a layer of makeup cannot conceal by itself. The comic discomfort of his attendants helps expose how deeply they accept those habits as normal. Maomao's willingness to coarsen his presentation comes from a different familiarity with everyday conditions. Yet the excerpt does not show the disguise working outside the room. Its technical preparation supports a narrower point: appearing ordinary requires noticing the privileges that the wearer and his household no longer notice.
