A date with Rize starts Ken Kaneki's story in Tokyo Ghoul, before he understands the danger of accepting it. This first paperback is the place to sample the manga if the attraction is an ordinary person's encounter with its monsters. Kaneki has something to lose before the horror begins. Starting here lets a newcomer judge that change against his earlier circumstances, then decide whether to collect the rest of the run.

Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.

The reason to begin here is the loss of Kaneki's ordinary position in the story. The publisher's synopsis identifies Rize as a predator and the rescue that follows as the cause of his transformation into a human-ghoul hybrid. That makes the premise more uncomfortable than an invitation to acquire supernatural strength. His survival creates the condition he must then survive. As a buying choice, the first book supplies the necessary before-and-after comparison; starting with a later battle volume would begin with the altered Kaneki and make his original vulnerability something to reconstruct.
