Witch Hat Atelier starts with Coco wanting a place in a profession she believes she cannot enter. Qifrey gives that wish a practical object: a magician whose work she can watch. Start here for the gap between what Coco is told about magic and what observation can establish. The single paperback lets you test that premise before committing to the larger Grimoire collection.
Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.
The opening makes ignorance a barrier that can be challenged. Coco believes magical ability is something a person must be born with; watching Qifrey gives her a reason to question the rule. That is a more useful buying distinction than whether a fantasy contains spells or dragons. Choose this beginning if the attraction is a learner testing an inherited explanation of the world. Grimoire Edition one also contains this material, together with the next two standard volumes. Buying both editions duplicates the start; it does not supply a second opening story.
