Beldaruit’s reward is a story about Qifrey’s past. Coco connects that information with her wish to save her mother and sets off for the Tower of Tomes. The reward therefore creates a new obligation in her own mind instead of simply confirming that she has done well. That is why the end of the trial is a misleading place to expect rest. For a reader following the apprenticeship, this book matters because knowledge becomes something Coco actively pursues beyond the terms of an examination. Finishing the assigned task does not finish the search.
