YuYu Hakusho 1 opens with Yusuke Urameshi dead and the people who knew him left to explain what sort of boy he was. This VIZ paperback collects chapters 1 to 8; it is the beginning of the manga, with a chapter boundary that does not translate into an anime episode count. The analysis here is limited to Chapter 1, pages 5 to 49, read in VIZ's free preview. It follows the accident and the wake rather than treating the publisher's promise of later spirit investigations as a review of the whole book. The quotations already on this site's series page are sourced to the anime and are not evidence for this edition's dialogue.

The first chapter makes Yusuke's reputation unreliable without pretending his conduct is harmless. Other pupils borrow his name to extort money, a teacher assumes he is responsible, and Yusuke later beats Kuwabara because he is angry. His attempt to save a child does not erase those actions. Botan further unsettles the rescue by saying the child would have survived without him, making the sacrifice unexpected even to the office that handles the dead. Yusuke initially refuses a chance to return because he thinks nobody will miss him. The wake answers that claim through people whose attachment has different forms: Keiko cries, Kuwabara demands another chance to beat him, and Takenaka cannot bring himself to praise the rescue because it cost Yusuke his life. His mother is left sobbing, and the child does not understand why he cannot thank him later. Yusuke agrees to take the test for resurrection after seeing this. The chapter's decisive correction concerns his estimate of his absence, rather than his estimate of his virtue.
