My Hero Academia Manga Buying Guide: Singles or the Two Boxes
Compare the two manga boxes with individual volumes, including their extras and the second box’s November 24, 2026 announcement.
For My Hero Academia, choose whether to build the main manga one paperback at a time or buy it in two large blocks. VIZ identifies Volume 42 as the final volume. The two boxes divide the story at 20/21, but their release status differs. The second box’s announced date matters if your aim is to read the later books now.
Singles and boxes compared
| Purchase | Main-story contents | Who should consider it |
|---|---|---|
| Singles | Individual numbered volumes | Try the opening, fill gaps, or buy only what remains |
| Box Set 1 | Volumes 1–20 | Start a shelf of separate books in one purchase |
| Box Set 2 | Volumes 21–42 | Buy the remaining main-story run after checking the announced date |
Box Set 1 was published October 18, 2022. Box Set 2 is announced for November 24, 2026. Checked October 8, 2026: that second date is still in the future, so treat Box Set 2 as a preorder rather than a released alternative to the singles.
The extras are separate from story coverage
Box Set 1 includes a full-color double-sided poster and a 48-page booklet of bonus illustrations and author commentary from Japanese volume 1–20 covers. VIZ’s first-box description explains the origin of that booklet. Buy it because those extras matter to you or because you want the included singles together; they do not make the main story longer.
Box Set 2 advertises a full-color double-sided poster and a 48-page booklet drawn from the Japanese volume 21–42 covers. The second-box listing describes a complementary block of books and extras. If a used seller offers a box without its booklet or poster, decide whether the remaining books alone satisfy your purpose.
Already own some volumes?
Write down your last contiguous single volume before comparing the boxes. If you own 1–20, Box Set 1 repeats that entire block, while Box Set 2 supplies the next block. If you own 1–25, Box Set 2 repeats 21–25: five owned volumes alongside seventeen new ones. The latter purchase might suit a collector rebuilding a uniform set, but it is a poor assumption for someone trying to avoid duplicates.
Gaps deserve their own calculation. If your shelf has 1–18 and 20, buying Box Set 1 to obtain 19 repeats nineteen books. An individual 19 is the more targeted search. A uniform container and the extras can still be preferences, but they should be named as preferences rather than disguised as missing story coverage.
Read now or wait for the second box?
The final single volume has a listed release date of October 21, 2025. That date precedes the second box’s announced release. VIZ’s Volume 42 listing therefore separates the end of the single-volume route from the future box release. Do not mistake a forthcoming package for a forthcoming ending.
If you want the later manga before the box date, look for the individual books you need. If you want the packaged second half with its booklet, wait for the box while checking its release date before payment. This is a timing choice as well as a packaging choice; a preorder is not something a gift recipient can unwrap immediately.
For a new reader, start with Volume 1 if you want to try the manga before committing to twenty books. Use the main-manga catalog for book identities and the box inventory for the two packages. Confirm My Hero Academia as the main title when shopping; this comparison does not turn separately titled related works into missing main-series volumes.
