Narumi and Hirotaka's early relationship in Wotakoi separates familiarity from confidence as a couple. Their shared interests give them something to recognize in each other, but the first four anime episodes make the change from friends to partners a source of uncertainty.

A familiar person in a new role

The official episode 1 synopsis places their reunion at Narumi's new workplace after a heartbreak prompts her job change. Hirotaka is a childhood friend whom she describes as an otaku friend. That existing category matters: he enters this new part of her life with a place in the old one.

My reading is that familiarity creates an expectation the romance immediately tests. Knowing how to spend time with someone need not settle what dating that person will mean. The friendship supplies history, but history cannot perform the change of relationship for them.

The awkwardness arrives after agreement

In episode 2, the two have become a couple, yet Narumi feels awkward and avoids Hirotaka. Their coworkers Hanako and Kabakura notice and offer advice. The order is the point: establishing the relationship has not eliminated the difficulty of being together.

That makes Narumi's avoidance more interesting than a simple obstacle to getting a boyfriend. The desired category has already changed. What remains uncertain is how she inhabits it. Calling this merely a failure to recognize compatibility would miss the pressure created by recognizing it and having to act differently around a familiar person.

Convenience becomes a question

Episode 4 gives the uncertainty another form. After a quarrel with Kabakura, Hanako worries that they are together because dating another otaku is easier. Narumi relates the question to her own relationship.

I read that comparison as a challenge to the idea that a shared category answers every romantic question. Hanako's doubt gives Narumi a question to consider; it does not establish that either relationship is empty. Ease can be a reason to start dating without being a complete account of why these particular people want each other.

The distinction also keeps the label otaku from doing all the analytical work. These episodes place uncertainty inside a relationship whose members already have common ground. Their difficulty concerns what that common ground can promise, and what they still have to discover about being a couple.
