Parasyte Manga: Full Color, Paperback Collection or the 2011 Run
Kodansha has published Parasyte in English three times, each complete in eight books: the 2011 paperbacks, the Full Color Collection hardcovers and the 2025 black-and-white Paperback Collection.
For most readers the choice is between Kodansha’s two newer editions: the Full Color Collection, eight hardcovers with the art colored throughout, and the Paperback Collection, eight cheaper paperbacks with the original black-and-white art and the same updated translation. An earlier eight-volume paperback run from 2011 to 2013 is the third option, with the older translation.
The three editions
| Edition | Format | Dates | US list |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full Color Collection | 8 hardcovers, color throughout | November 29, 2022 to October 22, 2024 | $19.99 each; $159.92 for eight |
| Paperback Collection | 8 paperbacks, black and white | December 16, 2025 to July 14, 2026 | $14.99 each; $119.92 for eight |
| Parasyte (earlier paperbacks) | 8 paperbacks, black and white | July 26, 2011 to January 31, 2013 | $10.99 each; $87.92 for eight |
Full Color or black and white
Kodansha describes the Full Color Collection as the manga “in a fully-colorized, premium-quality hardcover for the first time,” “presented in eight volumes containing about 300 pages of manga each.” The Paperback Collection came out of that edition. Kodansha’s March 2025 announcement says it features “Iwaaki’s original black-and-white art restored, as well as an updated translation, updated interior design, and new cover designs,” and that it “will include the updated translation, lettering, and size of the Parasyte Full Color Collection.”
So the two current editions share a translation and a page size; the difference is color, binding and $5 a book. Kodansha’s announcement calls the black-and-white art Iwaaki’s original; its Full Color Collection page calls the color hardcovers premium-quality. Neither is a sequel or an expanded version of the other.
The 2011 paperbacks
The earlier run is the same story in eight books, but with the earlier translation, which the 2025 announcement says the new editions update. Its ISBNs differ from the Paperback Collection, which matters when ordering: “Parasyte 3” and “Parasyte Paperback Collection 3” are different products. Kodansha still lists the 2011 books with a print price, but this guide makes no claim about stock. Nor were they the first English printing: an older Penguin Random House trade catalog lists an eight-volume Parasyte from Del Rey Manga, Vol. 1 ISBN 9780345496249, so check which publisher an old shelf came from.
Mixing editions
All three run to eight books, but none of the publisher pages we checked states that the volume breaks match across editions, so do not assume Full Color 5 picks up exactly where an old Vol. 4 ended. Check the opening chapter, or better, keep one edition. Our edition-switching guide explains the check.
