How to Switch Manga Editions Without Gaps
Find the next unread book when switching manga editions. Worked examples separate repeated material, gaps and edition wording.
Match the material inside the books before matching the numbers on their spines. “Volume 2” can mean the second original volume, a collection of several volumes, or the second book of a different series. A reading continuation starts with the last story material actually read. For a purchase, also record books already owned but unread, so the next binding does not duplicate them by accident.
Find Vinland Saga, Bleach, Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist or Rurouni Kenshin. The selected wording comparisons address a separate question from story coverage.

Three switches: the next unread material
| Finished reading | Next collected purchase | Repeated material | Unread material supplied |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vinland Saga regular Book One | Deluxe 1 | Japanese volumes 1–2 | Japanese volume 3. Jumping to Deluxe 2 skips it. |
| Bleach standard volumes 1–3 | Omnibus 2 | None of those three volumes | Standard volumes 4–6. Omnibus 1 repeats 1–3. |
| Death Note standard Volume 1 | Black Edition 1 | Standard Volume 1 | Standard Volume 2. Jumping to Black Edition 2 skips it. |
These are checked examples, not a formula for every manga. Compare buying the missing single with changing editions when only part of a collected book is unread. Contents, translations and extras are separate questions: a story overlap does not establish identical wording, page numbers or supplementary material.
Vinland Saga: the regular book is already a collection
Kodansha's original announcement identifies regular Book One as two volumes in one. Deluxe 1 contains Japanese volumes 1–3, and Deluxe 2 contains 4–6. Finishing regular Book One therefore does not make Deluxe 2 the next unread book.
Buying Deluxe 1 supplies the missing third Japanese volume but repeats the first two. That overlap may be acceptable to someone changing the whole collection; it is still an overlap to count before paying. Our Vinland catalog separates the English formats, and the edition comparison explains the opening switch. Neither treats a Deluxe number as a regular English book number.
Bleach: a final omnibus can break the pattern
Bleach's first omnibus collects standard volumes 1–3. The omnibus run ends at book 25, but that last book contains only volumes 73–74. Multiplying every spine number by three invents a volume that is not in the main run. The checked omnibus contents are the useful reference.
VIZ identifies Omnibus 2 as standard volumes 4–6, so it continues after singles 1–3 without repeating them.
The three boxes use another division: standard volumes 1–21, 22–48 and 49–74. Someone who owns the first seven omnibus books already has the story covered by the first box. Buying that box changes the bindings and adds its extras; it does not continue the story. The Bleach buying guide compares those choices. An anime season label supplies no evidence of the correct box boundary.
Death Note: count story volumes separately from extras
VIZ identifies Black Edition 1 as standard volumes 1–2. After finishing standard Volume 1, Black Edition 1 still supplies the unread standard Volume 2. Moving straight to Black Edition 2 would skip standard Volume 2, while buying Black Edition 1 repeats Volume 1. A larger binding does not remove the decision about duplication.
The complete box includes the twelve story volumes plus How to Read and a fold-out. The extra guide does not turn the story into thirteen volumes. How to Read and Short Stories are separately identified in the catalog. Their inclusion or exclusion matters to a collector, but should not distort a comparison of the main story.
Fullmetal Alchemist: switch at a chapter, not a spine number
Standard paperback 3 ends its numbered story at chapter 12; paperback 9 ends at chapter 37. Their printed contents were read in VIZ Volume 3 and VIZ Volume 9. For the hardcovers, Indianapolis Public Library’s staff contents list places Fullmetal Edition 2 at chapters 7–12, book 3 at 13–18, book 6 at 31–36 and book 7 at 37–42. The hardcover ranges below are attributed to that library list; they are not a claim that our editors inspected the hardcover contents pages.
| Finished reading | Where to continue |
|---|---|
| Standard paperbacks 1–3 | Fullmetal Edition 3, chapter 13. Both routes reach chapter 12 before this switch, so the next numbered chapter has no overlap. |
| Standard paperbacks 1–9 | Fullmetal Edition 7, chapter 38. This hardcover also contains chapter 37, already read in paperback 9. |
| Fullmetal Editions 1–6 | Standard paperback 9, chapter 37. Its chapters 34–36 repeat material already read; they are not missing chapters. |
The chapter-37 mismatch is the useful warning. Finishing Fullmetal Edition 6 does not mean standard paperbacks 1–9 have all been read: paperback 9 still contains the next numbered chapter. Conversely, finishing paperback 9 does not send a reader straight to Fullmetal Edition 8; book 7 contains the continuation. These examples concern numbered story chapters. Paperback 3 separately lists a side story and extras, so the shared chapter-12 ending does not establish identical bonus material, translation or pagination. Use the FMA buying guide to compare the bindings and dated list prices.
Two later Fullmetal Alchemist switches
The checked contents of standard volume 18 list chapters 70–73; standard volume 19 lists 74–78. The Indianapolis Public Library’s staff list records Fullmetal Edition 13 as chapters 73–79 and 14 as 80–86. The standard endpoints come from the books’ contents pages; the hardcover ranges here remain attributed to that library list.
| Finished reading | Next Fullmetal Edition | Overlap and continuation |
|---|---|---|
| Standard volumes 1–18, through chapter 73 | Fullmetal Edition 13 | Repeats chapter 73; continues with 74–79. |
| Standard volumes 1–19, through chapter 78 | Fullmetal Edition 13 | Repeats 73–78; supplies chapter 79. Jumping to 14 loses that chapter. |
Rurouni Kenshin: singles, VIZBIG and the smaller collections
Both English collected lines cover the original twenty-eight singles in nine books. VIZ lists each VIZBIG book’s contents; Simon & Schuster’s publisher records enumerate the smaller collections. Their story-volume boundaries align at the ends of collected books 1–8. Book 9 holds singles 25–28 in both lines, and the smaller book is explicitly 4-in-1. Do not apply a three-volume formula to that last book.
The table assumes every single through the stated endpoint has been read. It names the next collected book containing unread numbered story volumes; it does not establish matching bonus pages, translation, paper or binding. The two links in each row lead to the exact book in our edition inventories.
| Finished reading | Next collected purchase |
|---|---|
| None of the original story | VIZBIG 1 or smaller 3-in-1 1; contains original singles 1–3 |
| Original singles 1–3 | VIZBIG 2 or smaller 3-in-1 2; contains original singles 4–6 |
| Original singles 1–6 | VIZBIG 3 or smaller 3-in-1 3; contains original singles 7–9 |
| Original singles 1–9 | VIZBIG 4 or smaller 3-in-1 4; contains original singles 10–12 |
| Original singles 1–12 | VIZBIG 5 or smaller 3-in-1 5; contains original singles 13–15 |
| Original singles 1–15 | VIZBIG 6 or smaller 3-in-1 6; contains original singles 16–18 |
| Original singles 1–18 | VIZBIG 7 or smaller 3-in-1 7; contains original singles 19–21 |
| Original singles 1–21 | VIZBIG 8 or smaller 3-in-1 8; contains original singles 22–24 |
| Original singles 1–24 | VIZBIG 9 or smaller 4-in-1 9; contains original singles 25–28 |
| Original singles 1–28 | The original main story is complete. Neither collected route requires book 10. |
For example, after reading singles 1–6, continue with collected book 3 in either line, containing 7–9. After finishing VIZBIG 4, the smaller collection 5 continues with 13–15. The reverse switch has the same numbered-story boundary. Owning an unread book is not the same as reaching that endpoint.
A mid-block switch still repeats material. After single 2, collected book 1 contains unread single 3 alongside singles 1–2; skipping to collected book 2 loses that continuation. After single 27, collected book 9 is still needed for single 28, even though 25–27 repeat. Compare those overlaps with buying only the missing singles. The Kenshin catalog retains dated per-book prices. Restoration and The Hokkaido Arc are outside these original-story ranges.
Matching story contents does not guarantee matching wording
We compared one balloon in VIZ’s Death Note paperback 12 with the same panel in Black Edition VI, using the latter reader’s search result labeled Page 340. Both print: “Justice will be brought upon evil people. Justice will also be brought upon those who harm others.” That is an actual wording match in this selected passage, checked October 3, 2026. It does not establish that every balloon, printing or Black Edition book uses identical English.
Berserk supplies a counterexample. In Casca’s childhood account, the sixth-printing standard volume 6 gives her concern about returning home as “I don’t know what I’d use as an excuse when they question me...” The same balloon in Deluxe 2’s licensed preview says “Who knows what he’d do to me during my so-called questioning...?” Both pages were read on October 3, 2026. The larger book collects the same story here, while this sentence changes. This comparison covers that paperback printing and that Deluxe preview; it does not settle every later paperback printing.
We re-opened that same Casca balloon on October 5, 2026, in the paperback’s public search preview and the licensed Deluxe 2 preview. The paperback copyright page identifies ISBN 9781593072520 and the sixth-printing number line; the Deluxe preview identifies ISBN 9781506711997. Its corresponding page is preview image 13, PageID 16, with no printed folio visible. Our reading is that the paperback emphasizes the explanation Casca could give, while the Deluxe wording emphasizes what the official might do to her. The matching panel arrangement identifies the same moment; it does not establish which English sentence is closer to the Japanese. For a reader who cares about a remembered line, story-volume overlap alone therefore cannot promise that wording will survive an edition switch. This is a fresh check of one balloon in those identified witnesses, not a comparison of the complete books or later paperback printings.
Fruits Basket: the advertised books inside the box
Yen Press’s promotional image of the Complete Box Set shows twelve Collector’s books numbered 1–12, with new covers and the included cards. That is evidence for the advertised physical count, checked October 3, 2026. It does not establish the individual books’ ISBNs or identical interiors and bonus pages against the separately sold Collector’s Edition. If you already own all twelve Collector’s books, you already own the complete main story; the box buys that story again with a different presentation. Our Fruits Basket inventory keeps the two buying routes visible.
A check before changing formats
- Identify the exact book. Record the series, edition, language and ISBN. Similar cover art or a matching number is insufficient.
- Find the stated contents. Use the publisher's volume or chapter range. Check which numbering system it uses. When the range is missing or ambiguous, leave the switch unresolved.
- Mark overlap and gaps separately. A book can contain both familiar material and the only missing section. Duplication does not necessarily make it the wrong purchase.
- Compare the remaining purchases. A complete box can be good value for a new collection and an expensive way to fill two gaps. Compare the actual books needed, not only the advertised set discount.
- Keep extras and release status visible. A poster, guide or bonus chapter may affect the decision. An announced book does not complete a shelf today.
Page counts cannot replace a contents list: layouts and supplementary pages can differ. Our catalog comparisons use recorded US publisher list prices, not live shop offers or stock guarantees. Where contents or prices are unresolved, a blank is more useful than an invented saving.
The original examples were checked September 29, 2026; the Fullmetal Alchemist and Rurouni Kenshin switches were added October 2, 2026. For individual series, begin with the manga catalog; for the different question of choosing a collection from scratch, see our box-set guide.
