Chapel, Wolfwood's mentor, arrives in episode 23 carrying a choice that fits this line exactly. Knives has changed his order: Vash is to die now, and if Wolfwood does it he inherits Chapel's place among the Gung-Ho Guns and the children of his orphanage in the town of December are protected. Difficult, brutally limited, on a clock. The line presents that shape as the shape of life in general, and the generality is the trick, because it turns one man's order into a law of nature that nobody is answerable for. Wolfwood rejects the frame by sending Vash after the sniper and fighting Chapel himself, and he wins. The time limit turns out to be real anyway: Legato takes over Chapel's body, uses it to shoot Wolfwood, and the priest dies in a church before the episode ends.
