The headmaster, the god of death, and the lid on the grave under the school. Talks like a mascot and reveals, when pressed, that the god of madness was a man he knew. The manga makes him pay for that; the anime does not.
“I told you he was a frightened man, he was even terrified of his partner as well. So... he ate his own weapon.”
The sentence commits the whole setting to a definition. A kishin is not a monster that appears; it is what a meister becomes when fear makes him consume the person he was supposed to trust, and the first one was Death's own follower. Everything the academy does follows from that: the ninety-nine-souls rule, the partner system, the insistence on resonance between two people rather than power in one. Death is describing the failure the school exists to prevent, and he is describing it as something that happened to a man he knew. The manga later adds that they were closer than that, which recolors the line without changing a word of it.

This is the show's thesis said by its authority figure, and it is the least interesting way the show says it. The coin image is stock; the sentence could be handed to any wise elder in any series and lose nothing. What gives it any weight is what Death is not saying: that the god who grew afraid was one of his, that he dealt with the failing by flaying the man and sitting on the grave for centuries, and that the academy his students attend is the lid. The series makes him pay for that later, in the manga, with his life. Here he sounds like a headmaster at assembly. The better lines about fear all go to the people it has actually gotten into.
