The only person aboard the Bebop not carrying a past, which is a structural necessity rather than a quirk: four traumatized people in a small ship would be unwatchable. Keeps time in invented holidays.
“All right! Bonsai, bok choy, wise guy, water boy! Lights shine bright in the old town tonight!”
The fair objection is that this is noise, and half of it is. The other half is a roll call: bonsai for Jet, who has just asked her to water it, and the rhyme keeps going because nobody on the Bebop is willing to say goodbye in a form that could be answered. Ed's nonsense is where this crew puts the sentiment it will not otherwise admit to.
“Ed made up that name for Ed, isn't it cool?”
Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV is an invention, and Ed says so in the same breath she introduces it, which is the difference between her and everyone else aboard. Faye's surname was given to her by the doctor who woke her, and Jet's Black Dog is what his home satellite called him; both walk around under names somebody else issued. Ed is the only crew member whose name is her own work, and Hard Luck Woman confirms it, producing a father who calls her Françoise and cannot remember whether she is a son or a daughter. Spike's objection, that a made-up name cannot be the fourth of anything, is the adult response and it is beside the point. The 'IV' is there because it sounds good. Ed is the show's argument that a self can be built rather than recovered, and the show tests that argument against the rest of the crew and finds only her passing it.

“And this time, I hope you have sweet dreams.”
Ed's line is the crew's last word on a comatose boy who spent his sleep running a suicide cult through a television, and it is said by the one person on the ship who understands his condition. Ed lives in the net the way he did; the difference is that she can leave. What the line commits her to is a reading of the whole episode that the adults do not share. Spike has just shouted at the cult's avatar for confusing dots of light with reality; Jet has explained that the dreams went dark because dreaming was all the boy had. Ed's version has no diagnosis in it. She wishes him better dreams, which takes for granted that he will keep dreaming and that the dreaming was never the problem. One session later she walks off the ship and never comes back, and the crew reads it as loss. On this evidence she was leaving for a better dream. She said so, to somebody else, first.

A diary entry read aloud, in the third person, with a moral attached that inverts the one every child is taught. The show needs someone aboard who is not carrying a past, because three traumatized adults in a small ship would be unwatchable, and the solution is a character whose relationship to time is a list of invented holidays. The comedy is doing structural work.
