The Best Sailor Moon Quotes, and Which English They Come From

Spoilers throughout. This page assumes you have finished the series.

Most Sailor Moon quote lists never say which English they are quoting, and with this series that matters more than usual. The 1990s English dub renamed the cast (Usagi became Serena) and, in one well-known case, changed what two characters were to each other; Viz Media’s later release, Anime News Network reported, kept “the original Japanese names, story elements, and relationships” with an uncut new dub. The Wikiquote transcription mixes both, but in several scenes it labels each block as the DiC dub or the Viz Media dub, so the version of a line can be read off the page. Six verified lines follow, one for Usagi and each of the inner Guardians and one for Michiru, with the version stated for each.

“Goodbye, my ordinary life. It was fun while it lasted.” — Usagi Tsukino

Viz dub, the first episode of Sailor Moon R. A shrug from a girl who was given an ordinary life back at the end of the first season and gives it up again in the episode that revives her as Sailor Moon.

“Love is no laughing matter, but you get a happy feeling from it.” — Ami Mizuno

Viz dub, the first season’s finale, one of four memories Princess Serenity calls on before the last attack. The DiC dub remembers Ami for offering help with homework instead; the page records both.

“Dummy, you won't be alone. You still have Mamoru, remember?” — Rei Hino

From Sailor Stars, which had no 1990s English dub. Rei’s last comfort to Usagi names Mamoru, though one episode earlier she heard that he never showed up at his university in America; the next episode opens with Usagi crying that Galaxia killed him.

“So what if he already has a girlfriend? I think it's worth giving it a shot.” — Makoto Kino

Viz dub, the same finale montage. A narrow memory, but the only one of the four that urges an attempt against bad odds, which is what Usagi needs at that moment.

“I'm not. But like all of you, I'm a Guardian dedicated to protecting the princess.” — Minako Aino

Viz dub, Venus’s answer when Sailor Moon asks whether she is the Moon Princess. The weakest line here, included for that reason: it clears the way for the episode’s princess reveal and says little about Minako. The commentary makes the case.

“I can endure, if I'm with you. Even if we're burned in the flames of hell.” — Michiru Kaioh

From Sailor Stars, so it never passed through the dub that recast Haruka and Michiru as cousins. Read it beside Haruka’s reply, “Hell, huh? It doesn’t suit you,” which is the gentler of the two.

Every line here sits with its full commentary on the Sailor Moon quote page. Where the transcription does not label a line’s version, we say so: the two Sailor Stars lines carry no label on the page, and all that can be settled is that they are not from the 1990s dub, which never reached that season. How each quote on this site is checked is at our verification notes.
