Sailor Moon Watch Order: the 1990s Anime, Crystal, Eternal and Cosmos
Sailor Moon has two anime lines: the 200-episode original series with its three films, and Crystal, which continues as the Eternal and Cosmos film pairs. Crystal retells the manga rather than following the 1990s show.
Sailor Moon has two anime lines, and you can start with either. The original anime (1992–1997) is five television series, 200 episodes in all, plus three feature films. Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal (2014–2016, three seasons) began a second adaptation of Naoko Takeuchi’s manga, and it continues in two pairs of films rather than more television: Sailor Moon Eternal (2021) and Sailor Moon Cosmos (2023). Crystal is not a sequel to the 1990s series; it tells the story again.
| Line | Watch in this order |
|---|---|
| Original anime | Sailor Moon (46 episodes), Sailor Moon R (43), Sailor Moon S (38), Sailor Moon SuperS (39), Sailor Moon Sailor Stars (34); the three films are optional extras |
| Crystal line | Crystal seasons I–II (26 episodes), Crystal Season III (13 episodes), Sailor Moon Eternal (two films), Sailor Moon Cosmos (two films) |
The original anime, 1992–1997
Toei Animation’s own listings give each series’ length and Japanese broadcast run:
| Series | Episodes | Aired in Japan |
|---|---|---|
| Sailor Moon | 46 | March 7, 1992 – February 27, 1993 |
| Sailor Moon R | 43 | March 6, 1993 – March 12, 1994 |
| Sailor Moon S | 38 | March 19, 1994 – February 25, 1995 |
| Sailor Moon SuperS | 39 | March 4, 1995 – March 2, 1996 |
| Sailor Moon Sailor Stars | 34 | March 9, 1996 – February 8, 1997 |
Watch them in that order; each series follows the one before it. The three films belong one to each of the middle series: Sailor Moon R: The Movie (1993), Sailor Moon S: The Movie (1994) and Sailor Moon SuperS: The Movie (1995), according to Anime News Network’s encyclopedia, which is user-edited and which we use here only for the years. ANN’s licensing report counts them separately from the 200 episodes, and this guide treats them as optional: watch each after the series it belongs to, or skip them.
When Viz Media licensed this anime in 2014, ANN reported that the deal covered “all 200 episodes from the five television series, the three feature films, and the assorted tie-in specials,” and that Viz was releasing it “with the original Japanese names, story elements, and relationships” and an uncut new English dub. The same report said it would be the first North American release of Sailor Stars. That matters if you remember the 1990s English version, which used different names and changed some relationships; our fact-check on the “cousins” rewrite covers the best-known case.
The Crystal line, 2014–2023
Sailor Moon Crystal began streaming on July 5, 2014. ANN reported that “The new 26-episode series will stream worldwide twice a month for one year,” beginning July 5. Its second half, from January 17, 2015, “includes the story from the original manga’s ‘Black Moon’ arc,” according to ANN. ANN calls the episodes from January 17 the second season, so those 26 episodes are seasons I and II.
Season III, with a new staff, “focused on the Death Busters arc (also called the Infinity arc)” and premiered in April 2016, ANN reported. The official Sailor Moon site’s news page refers to the third season’s “Death Busters” arc as 13 episodes (全13話).
There is no fourth television season. The same ANN report says the two-part Sailor Moon Eternal film project “will take the place of a fourth season for Sailor Moon Crystal” and covers the manga’s “Dead Moon” arc. After a COVID-19 delay, ANN reported, the first film opened in Japan on January 8, 2021 and the second on February 11, 2021. Netflix began streaming both worldwide on June 3, 2021.
Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Cosmos the Movie finishes the line. It is “the two-part anime film project adapting the final ‘Shadow Galactica’ arc of Naoko Takeuchi’s original Sailor Moon manga,” and ANN reported that the first film opened on June 9, 2023 and the second on June 30, 2023, with Netflix streaming both from August 22, 2024.
Which line first?
Either works, because neither depends on the other. The original anime is the long route: 200 episodes. The Crystal line is the short one: 39 episodes and four films, adapting the manga arc by arc in the order ANN describes above. If you watch both, keep each line together. The final arc of each is the same story told twice: ANN describes Sailor Stars as the season that “adapts the ‘Shadow Galactica’ arc,” the same arc Cosmos adapts.
For the manga those arcs come from, see the Sailor Moon manga buying guide and the Kodansha edition catalog. This guide makes no claim about which manga volume each season reaches.
